Every suite includes individually controlled air conditioning, openable windows, a writing desk, a personal safe and a bar fridge. Every suite has an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower, flush toilet and basin vanity. The real differences are size and bed configuration, and both matter enormously on a multi-night journey.
The Pullman Suite
The Pullman Suite is the entry-level class, measuring approximately 7 square metres. During the day, it functions as a compact private lounge with a sofa seat. In the evening, housekeeping staff convert that sofa into upper and lower bunk beds, or a double bed depending on occupancy.
This conversion process is the suite’s defining trade-off. It works well for shorter journeys, particularly the two-night Cape Town to Pretoria route. On longer itineraries, the daily conversion becomes a genuine inconvenience. Wanting an afternoon nap means contacting housekeeping and waiting for the room to be reset, which interrupts the relaxed rhythm most guests are seeking.
Frequent Rovos Rail travellers consistently steer first-time guests away from Pullman for anything beyond two nights. It is a fine introduction to the train, but not the suite for a week-long expedition.
The Deluxe Suite
The Deluxe Suite spans roughly 10 to 11 square metres and solves the Pullman Suite’s core limitation. The bed is permanent, either a double or side-by-side twin configuration, and never needs converting. A separate seating area with two armchairs sits alongside it.
This permanence changes daily life on board noticeably. Guests can rest whenever they like without summoning staff. The extra square metres also make packing, dressing and simply moving around the suite considerably easier over a multi-day journey.
For most travellers booking three nights or more, Deluxe represents the strongest balance of space, comfort and price. It is the suite class we recommend most often for longer routes like Pretoria to Victoria Falls or the grand transcontinental expeditions.
The Royal Suite
The Royal Suite is Rovos Rail’s flagship accommodation, occupying roughly 16 square metres, effectively half a full carriage. It features a permanent king-size double bed, a spacious private lounge area and a full en-suite bathroom with a Victorian claw-foot bathtub alongside a separate shower stall.
This is the suite for travellers who want a genuine residence on rails rather than simply a comfortable cabin. Honeymooners and guests marking a significant milestone gravitate toward Royal Suites for the bathtub alone, since a proper soak after a day of excursions is a rare luxury on any train.
The price premium over Deluxe is substantial, and worth weighing against how much time you will actually spend in the suite versus the dining and lounge cars.
