Unforgettable Africa 2027

An Exclusive Guided Experience Through Southern Africa’s Most Extraordinary Wild Spaces

Some journeys are simply very good. And then there are the ones that mark you permanently, that rearrange your sense of what the world is and what your place within it might be. Unforgettable Africa 2027 belongs emphatically to the second category.

This is a journey conceived for eight guests only. Not as a marketing detail, but as a deliberate and considered choice, because the experiences at the heart of this itinerary demand intimacy, demand flexibility, and demand the kind of unhurried depth that is simply impossible at scale. Eight guests means private access to landscapes and encounters that group travel cannot reach. It means conversations of genuine substance around fires in the wilderness. It means expert guides, conservationists, and the remarkable people who dedicate their lives to protecting Africa’s wild places, giving you their full attention rather than dividing it among a crowd.

The journey moves through Southern Africa’s most iconic and remote landscapes in a sequence that builds in wonder at every turn. Private reserves where the wildlife encounters are shaped by knowledge rather than luck. Wild frontiers that very few travellers ever reach. World-renowned natural wonders experienced not from a viewpoint but from within, from above, from angles that only privileged access and exceptional planning can deliver. Helicopter landings on islands that see no other visitors. Time spent alongside conservationists tracking elusive wildlife through a country that has barely changed in a thousand years. Moments of such unexpected beauty and such genuine rarity that they become part of the permanent furniture of memory.

This is not a safari in the conventional sense. It is a gathering of like-minded, curious, impact-driven travellers brought together by a shared appetite for the exceptional, guided through one of the earth’s most extraordinary regions by people who know it with genuine intimacy. Africa changes those who give it proper attention. This journey is designed to give it that, and to ensure that every one of the eight guests who travels it returns home carrying something that no itinerary can fully describe in advance.

Your Investment For This Experience

An investment of USD 29,430 per person sharing secures your place among eight guests on one of the most carefully considered and genuinely exclusive small-group journeys available in Southern Africa today. Every detail of what that investment delivers has been chosen for its quality, its rarity, and its ability to produce experiences that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere or at any other scale.

The journey is personally hosted by Sean Lues, whose knowledge of the African continent, its wild places, and its most remarkable people has shaped every chapter of this itinerary. Travelling with Sean means travelling with someone who understands not just where to go but how to be in these places, and the difference that makes to the experience is considerable. Throughout the journey, you will also have the rare privilege of spending time with some of southern Africa’s most fascinating and distinguished personalities, conservationists, guides, and thought leaders whose stories and insights add a dimension to the journey that no amount of planning alone can manufacture.

Eight guests. One extraordinary journey. A very small number of places remain.

The drive itself is an experience, two and a half hours along smooth highway, an hour on scenic gravel roads, and a final hour of off-road adventure as the landscape shifts from vineyards to dramatic sandstone escarpments.

Your destination is Bakkrans, a secluded wilderness camp tucked deep in the mountains. On arrival, a welcoming lunch awaits beneath ancient cliffs, the silence broken only by the breeze. After a relaxed orientation and check-in, there’s time to wander, settle into the stillness, or simply breathe in the pure mountain air.

As the day fades, head out to the surreal mushroom rock formations for sundowners, where shifting light and shadows paint a magical scene. Dinner is served beneath a starlit sky—an open-air feast prepared by camp chefs, enjoyed in the company of your hosts who share stories by the fireside, bringing the land to life.

A Journey to a Million Stars

Bakkrans is a place where history and nature intertwine, reflecting the deep connections between its earliest inhabitants and the land. Once home to San hunter-gatherers and Khoikhoi pastoralists, the area later saw the arrival of Boer trekkers and their livestock. Despite this, the rugged mountainous terrain remained largely untouched, preserving its pristine beauty.

Today, Bakkrans is dedicated to sustainable conservation, resisting intrusive development and embracing a philosophy of minimal environmental impact.

Situated within the ancient Cape Fold Belt, the Cederberg’s striking geological formations stand as a testament to millions of years of natural evolution, reinforcing the area’s status as one of South Africa’s geological treasures.

For two nights, guests enjoy exclusive access to this private camp. South African cook, writer, and storyteller Justin Bonello joins as a special host, infusing each evening with warmth and narrative depth.

A professional Cederberg expert guide will accompany hikes, enriching your exploration of this wild and timeless landscape.

Tracking Leopards & Ancient Stories

Wake early to the stillness of the Cederberg, sipping coffee or tea on the stoep of your shepherd’s hut as the sun rises over the mountains.

After a light breakfast, set off on an off-road expedition to the remote Mooiberg Plains with a researcher from the Cape Leopard Trust. Here, you’ll help install a camera trap in an area where elusive leopards have been tracked for over two decades—an extraordinary opportunity to engage with real conservation work.

Later, continue on foot with a top archaeologist from ECrag, hiking into hidden sandstone overhangs and caves etched with ancient rock art. These silent galleries, untouched for millennia, offer a rare glimpse into the spiritual life of early inhabitants.

Return to Bakkrans for a relaxed lunch, followed by a leisurely afternoon beside the eco-pool, soaking in the silence and mountain air.

As the day cools, journey to Arri’s Pass for sunset drinks with sweeping views over the wilderness.

The evening concludes with another candlelit dinner beneath the stars, locally inspired and expertly prepared, served fireside at the boma.

Final Footsteps in the Cederberg

Begin your morning with coffee or tea on the stoep, watching the first light wash over the rugged peaks.

Lace up your boots for an early hike along a leopard trail, following the silent paths these elusive predators have travelled for centuries. The stillness of the Cederberg envelops you, with your guide revealing stories etched in tracks and hidden signs along the way.

Pause at Du Preez Hut for light refreshments, taking in sweeping final views of this ancient, untouched landscape before returning to camp by vehicle. After a hearty breakfast and heartfelt farewells, guests climb back into their 4x4s for the drive to Cape Town.

As you wind past sandstone cliffs and expansive plains, the wild spirit of the Cederberg remains, a lasting imprint from your journey into this raw and timeless wilderness.

If the weather is good this afternoon, it may be worth trying a hike or cable car up Table Mountain.

Cape Peninsula

The Cape Peninsula is one of the most strikingly beautiful regions on the African continent, where sweeping ocean views meet dramatic cliffs, historic lighthouses, and legends of ghost ships.

At its heart lies Cape Point Nature Reserve, part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its extraordinary biodiversity.

This area teems with life, from over 250 bird species, including Cape sugarbirds and endangered African black oystercatchers, to antelope like eland and klipspringer, and elusive creatures such as caracal and Cape clawless otters.

Among the rock pools and fynbos, one might even glimpse the rare Table Mountain ghost frog or hear the distinctive call of the Cape chirping frog.

Waterford Estate & Farewell Dinner

The Cape Winelands at Their Finest

Nestled in the Blaauwklippen Valley beneath the dramatic face of the Helderberg Mountain, Waterford Estate is one of the Cape Winelands’ most beautifully situated and critically acclaimed properties, and today it is entirely yours.

A private cellar tour with the winemaker opens the experience, moving through a cellar designed around a natural courtyard where the craft and philosophy behind Waterford’s award-winning wines is explained with the kind of first-hand authority and personal passion that no tasting room visit can replicate.

The tour moves through the working heart of the estate before arriving at the intimate Jem Room for a private three-course lunch paired with three exceptional wines, the winemaker joining the table to share the stories behind each bottle, the conversation as carefully considered as the food and wine that accompany it.

The evening brings the group together one final time for a farewell dinner, and it is an ending that the journey deserves.

The connections made across these days in the wild and in the winelands, the shared sightings, the conversations around the fire, the moments that belong only to this particular gathering of people in these particular places, find their natural conclusion around a table set for eight.

A celebration of an extraordinary journey and of the remarkable continent that made it possible.

Departure Day: Farewell to Africa

A final unhurried morning in Cape Town, the mountain above the city catching the early light one last time before the journey home begins.

A private transfer to Cape Town International Airport takes care of everything practical, leaving only the pleasure of reflection and the particular quiet satisfaction of a journey that has delivered on every promise and exceeded most of them.

Southern Africa sends its guests home carrying something that no itinerary can fully anticipate, and no photograph entirely captures.

The sound of the bush at first light. The weight of a conservation story told by someone who has dedicated their life to it.

The Zambezi at golden hour. The eight of you around a fire in the wilderness, somewhere genuinely remote, sharing something genuinely rare.

Travel well. Africa will be waiting when you return.

The Great Plains Foundation

The Great Plains Foundation is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation, rescue, and recovery of Africa’s most threatened landscapes, wildlife, and communities. Founded by renowned conservationists Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the Foundation operates under the philosophy that intact ecosystems have inherent value and that we have a responsibility to maintain and restore them when they are under threat.

Guests staying at Great Plains Conservation camps contribute directly to these efforts. A nightly conservation and community contribution of US$100 per person is included in the rates, supporting initiatives such as wildlife protection, habitat restoration, and community development. Notably, the Foundation has taken over the management of the Big Cats Initiative, furthering its commitment to halting the decline of big cat populations in the wild.

For travellers seeking a meaningful safari experience, staying at a Great Plains camp offers the opportunity to enjoy luxury accommodations while actively contributing to vital conservation work across Africa.

Why African Signature

Curated Destinations

The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.

Tailored Experiences

The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.

Sustainable Stewardship

The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.

 Travel Insurance

Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.

Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.

Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.

Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
