Wild Zimbabwe – An Adventure Safari

Adrenaline, Wilderness & the Raw Edge of Africa

There is a version of Africa that you observe from a vehicle, and there is a version that gets into your bloodstream. This journey is emphatically the latter. It begins at one of the most viscerally exciting places on earth, Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi drops into a chasm with a force that you feel in your chest before you see it with your eyes, and then moves you deeper and deeper into wilderness areas where the adventure is less manufactured and more fundamental.

The thrill of tracking a predator on foot. The particular alertness of a walking safari, where every sense is switched on, and the bush is no longer a backdrop but an immediate, present reality.

The feeling of being genuinely small in a genuinely vast landscape. Zimbabwe does not do adventure by half measures — it offers the full spectrum, from the white-knuckle adrenaline of the gorge below the Falls to the slower, deeper adventure of days spent entirely in the wild with guides who know how to find its edges.

This is a journey for those who travel to feel alive. Zimbabwe will oblige.

Zambezi River cruise boat passing herd of hippos

Arrive at Victoria Falls & settle in at The Palm River Hotel

Arrive at Victoria Falls International Airport and transfer by road to The Palm River Hotel, sitting directly on the Zambezi. Check in, get your bearings, and spend the afternoon on the river, because even the act of watching the Zambezi move past, knowing what it is about to do a few kilometres downstream, carries a particular charge.

Victoria Falls town is small and easily navigated, and an afternoon walk reveals the full menu of what awaits tomorrow, the adventure operators, the gorge viewpoints, the spray rising above the treeline in the distance like smoke from a fire that never goes out. Get to bed early. Tomorrow is a big day.

Victoria Falls — guided Falls tour, adventure activities, Lookout Café lunch & sunset cruise

This is one of the great adventure days in Africa, and it begins with the Falls themselves  , a private guided walk that takes you through the full length of the viewpoints, into the spray, to the knife-edge of the gorge where the scale of what the Zambezi has carved over millennia becomes suddenly and completely real. Entrance fees included. No photograph prepares you for the moment the sound hits you, a deep, continuous roar that fills the air and the chest simultaneously.

Victoria Falls offers one of the most concentrated collections of adventure activities on the continent and the afternoon is yours to push as hard as you choose. The white water rafting on the Zambezi gorge below the Falls is among the finest in the world, a full day of Grade 4 and 5 rapids through a canyon that feels utterly wild and completely removed from everything above it.

For those who want altitude rather than water, a microlight flight over the Falls delivers a perspective that reframes the entire landscape in minutes. Bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, 111 metres above the Zambezi, is exactly as straightforward and as terrifying as it sounds.

Lunch at The Lookout Café above the gorge, ideally earned after a morning that has already delivered more than most days manage. And then, as the sun begins its descent, the Zambezi sunset cruise — the river calm now, the drama of the day softening into something golden and unhurried, the body pleasantly exhausted and the mind still humming. Food included; drinks excluded. River usage fees included.

Adventure activities are available at an additional cost and can be arranged and pre-booked on request.

Guided Tour of Victoria Falls-Victoria Falls, Zambia

Let your guide lead you along the jungle‑fringed footpaths of Mosi‑oa‑Tunya, where the thundering pulse of Victoria Falls is felt in your chest before it’s seen by your eyes. At each hidden lookout, they’ll pause so you can soak up a fresh angle, rainbow‑laced Main Falls, the swirling cauldron of the Boiling Pot, the curtain‑wide Horseshoe. Your raincoat soon earns its keep as warm spray drifts up from the gorge, misting cameras and laughter alike.

Perched on the edge of the Batoka Gorge, the Lookout Café is a favorite in Victoria Falls. With breathtaking views of the gorge and the Zambezi River, this open-air café offers more than just a meal.

The stunning scenery, including views of the Victoria Falls Bridge and the mist from the Falls, keeps visitors returning. Located near the Victoria Falls Rainforest entrance and the Wild Horizons high-wire activities, diners can watch thrill-seekers on the gorge swing, zip line, and flying foxes. The menu boasts rave reviews, featuring hearty meals, platters, and snacks, perfect with a cold beer, cocktail, or wine.

This afternoon, head out on an included game drive that also visits the conservation project and the camp’s vulture experience, an insightful look at local raptors and scavengers and their role in the ecosystem. Wrap up with sundowners in the bush and return to camp for a celebratory final dinner.

Game rangers and guests pose with orange sunset backdrop, Hwange

Fly to Hwange & arrive at Verney’s Camp

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the scheduled light aircraft flight to Verney’s Camp. The flight carries you over the Zambezi escarpment and out across the vast Hwange ecosystem, the landscape below trackless, enormous, and immediately suggestive of a different kind of adventure entirely.

This is where the adrenaline of the Falls gives way to something deeper and in many ways more compelling, the raw, unfiltered experience of big game country where the wilderness is not curated, and the wildlife does not perform on schedule. On arrival, settle in and head straight out for the first game drive.

Hwange’s elephants tend to announce themselves early and without ceremony.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Verney’s Camp
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 4: Safari days at Verney’s Camp

Guests in safari vehicle with lioness encounter, Hwange National Park

Safari days at Verney’s Camp — walking safaris & game drives

The adventure in Hwange is not the manufactured kind;  it is the real kind, and it operates on the bush’s own terms. Walking safaris here, led by guides whose knowledge of the landscape and its wildlife is intimate and deeply earned, deliver an experience of acute physical awareness that no vehicle-based safari can replicate.

On foot in the African bush, every sense recalibrates, sounds become significant, the wind direction matters, the ground tells stories, and the distance between you and a wild animal is measured not in the comfortable metres of a game drive but in something altogether more immediate.

This is adventure stripped to its essential, no equipment, no harness, no safety net, beyond the expertise of the person walking beside you and the alertness of your own attention.

Game drives in the afternoon extend the experience into Hwange’s golden hours, the light, the dust, the predators beginning to move as the heat softens. Sundowners in the bush. Dinner under a sky that has no competition from any artificial light for a hundred kilometres in every direction.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Verney’s Camp
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 5: Another Day in Hwange’s Wilderness

Elevated view of lodge and nearby watering hole, Verny’s Camp
Boma fire burning with main lodge lit up in background, Verny’s Camp
Elephant at waterhole near Verneys Camp tents, Hwange National Park Zimbabwe

Another day in Hwange’s wilderness

A second full day in Hwange to go further into the landscape, further into the rhythm of the bush, and further into the particular mental state that the wilderness produces in people who give it enough time.

There is an adventure in stillness as well as in movement, and the best guides know how to deliver both the charged, alert experience of a walking safari in big game country, and the quieter, equally compelling experience of sitting at a waterhole and watching the ecosystem organise itself around water.

Early activity, a midday rest back at camp, and an afternoon drive as the light turns the whole landscape golden.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Verney’s Camp
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 6: Fly Onward to Fothergill

Fothergill Island lodge overlooking Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe
Guests crouched behind anthill observing distant elephant on walking safari
Safari guide showing fish caught in Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe

Fly onward to Fothergill

A scheduled light aircraft flight from Verney’s Camp to Fothergill, the landscape shifting dramatically as the dry Hwange woodlands give way to the vast open expanse of Lake Kariba.

From the air, Kariba is extraordinary, the drowned trees of the flooded valley rising from the water like a forest frozen in time, the lake stretching to a horizon that seems impossibly distant.

Fothergill sits on the shoreline, and the change of atmosphere on arrival is immediate, broader, wilder, and charged with the particular energy of a great body of water in a remote landscape. A completely different adventure begins here.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Fothergill
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 7: Exploring from Fothergill

Large bull elephant walking through Fothergill Island lodge camp
Crocodile entering river with another on bank, Fothergill Island
Leopard in sunset lighting surveying land, Fothergill Island

Exploring from Fothergill — on the water and in the bush

Fothergill’s position on Lake Kariba opens up an entirely different dimension of adventure, the possibility of exploring by boat through the drowned forest, where elephants swim between islands and crocodiles patrol the shallows with ancient, unhurried menace.

Game drives through the surrounding bush offer their own rewards, and the birdlife here includes fish eagles, skimmers, and kingfishers working the shoreline — rewards those who take the time to look.

The landscape at Fothergill has a raw, frontier quality that feels genuinely wild, less polished than some safari destinations, more elemental, and all the better for it.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Fothergill
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 8: Another Great Day in The Wild

Safari vehicle at sunset with guests stopped for sundowner drinks
Herd of elephants swimming in Lake Kariba near Fothergill Island
Two hippos playing with jaws wide open in Lake Kariba

A Great Day in The Wild

A second day at Fothergill to push deeper into the bush on foot if the guiding allows, onto the water in the early morning when the lake is still, and the light is extraordinary, or simply out into the surrounding wilderness for a full day of game viewing in a landscape that rewards patience and movement in equal measure.

By now, the journey has built a momentum of its own.

The body is attuned to early mornings, the eyes are sharper, the appetite for the bush is, if anything, greater than it was at the start. Africa does this to people who give it enough time.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Fothergill
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 9: Fly to Kavinga Safari Camp

Aerial angle of Kavinga Camp and watering hole in Mana Pools Zimbabwe

Wildlife viewing hide at Kavinga Camp overlooking watering hole in Zimbabwe

Kavinga Safari Camp

After breakfast, the final light aircraft flight carries you to Kavinga Safari Camp, the last and often the most intense chapter of the journey.

There is a particular quality of engagement that arrives towards the end of a safari of this length, a depth of attention, a sharpness of observation, and an appetite for the wild that has only grown with each passing day.

Kavinga sits in a landscape of exceptional game density, and the guides here are among the finest in Zimbabwe. Arrive, settle in, and head straight out. The bush does not wait.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Kavinga Safari Camp
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 10: Safari Immersion at Kavinga

Two male lions walking in golden light, Mana Pools Zimbabwe
Adult elephants and calves playing in waterhole at Kavinga Camp
Safari vehicle in dry riverbed photographing fresh kill, Mana Pools

Safari immersion at Kavinga — walking, tracking & game drives

Kavinga’s guiding team excels at exactly the kind of active, immersive safari experience that this journey has been building towards: walking safaris through prime big game country, tracking on foot, and game drives that go beyond sightings into a genuine understanding of the ecosystem and how to read it.

By this point in the journey, the language of the bush has become familiar with the alarm calls, the tracks, the behaviour that signals something is close.

That familiarity makes the encounters here richer, more layered, and in many ways more exciting than the first sightings at the start of the journey. Early light, expert guiding, and a landscape that delivers.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Kavinga Safari Camp
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 10: Final Day On Safari at Kavinga Camp

Safari vehicle at sunset watching pride of lions, Mana Pools Zimbabwe
Two lions crouched drinking at waterhole Mana Pools Zimbabwe
Large male lion with golden mane looking at camera in Mana Pools

Final Day of Safari at Kavinga Camp

The last full day, and the bush has one more chance to deliver something extraordinary, and in Zimbabwe, with guides of this calibre in landscapes of this quality, it almost always does.

A final walking safari in the early morning while the air is cool and the light is clean. A last game drive in the afternoon as the shadows stretch and the golden hour does what the golden hour always does in Africa.

A final sundowner somewhere in the wild, chosen by the guide for reasons that only become clear when you arrive and see the view.

A last evening around the fire, the sounds of the African night all around, the body tired in the best possible way and the mind full of everything that has happened in the days since the Falls announced the beginning of this journey with their thunder.
Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Kavinga Safari Camp
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 10: Depart To Harare for Flights

Departure Day

Last breakfast in the bush.

Transfer to Harare International Airport for onward international connections. You leave with the particular physical ease of someone who has spent nearly two weeks moving through wild spaces, and the particular mental clarity that the African bush tends to leave behind.

The adventure is over. The stories are just beginning.

Why African Signature

Curated Destinations

The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.

Tailored Experiences

The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.

Sustainable Stewardship

The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.

 Travel Insurance

Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.

Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.

Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.

Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
