Remote Luxury in Namibia

An Exceptional Journey Through Namibia’s Most Extraordinary Wild Spaces

The most discerning travellers have long understood something that the rest of the world is only beginning to catch up with: that true luxury and true wilderness are not in competition but in perfect alignment.

The finest safari experiences on earth are not those that bring the city to the bush, but those that create an environment of complete comfort and complete immersion simultaneously, where the quality of the linen and the quality of the guiding are held to exactly the same standard, and where every detail of the journey has been considered so thoroughly that the guest never needs to think about anything except being present in one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

Namibia offers this in abundance. It is a country of vast private spaces, intimate camps, and a culture of guiding and hospitality that consistently ranks among the finest in Africa. This journey moves through its most compelling landscapes in a sequence that builds from the iconic to the remote, from the celebrated dune sea of Sossusvlei to the fog-wrapped solitude of the Skeleton Coast, through the wild and largely unvisited Hoanib river country, and finally to the exceptional private reserve of Ongava on Etosha’s boundary.

Accommodation has been selected for excellence in every sense: the quality of the rooms, the standard of the cuisine, the calibre of the guiding, and the sense of place that the finest camps always deliver. Light aircraft connect each chapter of the journey in comfort and in style. Nothing has been left to chance. Everything has been left to the landscape.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Windhoek

View of Windhoek, Namibia, showing a mix of traditional and modern buildings.
Aerial shot of Heinitzburg Boutique Hotel on hill with guest terrace in foreground
Aerial view of Heinitzburg Boutique Hotel swimming pool and surrounding area

Arrive Windhoek

Arrive in Windhoek and transfer to your boutique city hotel, chosen for its quality, its calm, and its ability to ease the transition from the journey here to the journey that begins tomorrow.

Windhoek is a more considered city than its size suggests, and an evening at one of its better restaurants, with a glass of excellent South African wine and the warm Namibian air on the terrace, is a more than adequate introduction to what lies ahead. Tonight is for settling in. Everything else begins tomorrow.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Hotel Heinitzburg

Day 2: Fly to Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve

Front view of Sossusvlei Desert Lodge with swimming pool in foreground and desert plains behind
Sunset drinks setup on rock with desert views at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
Overhead shot of two oryx walking one behind the other with shadows on red desert sand

Fly to Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve

A private light aircraft transfer south into the Namib, the landscape below shifting through its extraordinary sequence from pale scrubland to gravel plains to the great wave after wave of the dune sea.

The aircraft delivers you directly into the desert experience rather than at its edge, and the lodge that receives you understands the art of arrival. Time to settle into your accommodation, to appreciate the considered design that places the desert at every window and on every terrace, before heading out for a first afternoon drive as the light begins its evening transformation.

A sundowner in the open Namib, the silence absolute and the colours extraordinary, sets the standard for everything that follows.

Day 3: Sossusvlei & Deadvlei at First Light

Safari vehicle on game drive through red sand dunes of Namib Desert
Guests walking with safari guide through Namib Desert dunes
Huge male oryx walking up red dune with sunlight and shadows in Namib Desert

Sossusvlei & Deadvlei at First Light

An early start, the desert cool and still and entirely yours at this hour.

The pre-dawn drive to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei is one of the great private moments of this journey, the dunes beginning to glow as the sun climbs and the ancient camelthorn skeletons of Deadvlei casting their long shadows across the white clay pan in a scene of such composed, otherworldly beauty that it rewards complete silence and complete attention. Your guide brings the landscape to life with the kind of knowledge that only comes from years of intimate familiarity with this particular environment.

The middle of the day is yours entirely. The lodge is designed for the long, unhurried hours between drives, its pool and shaded terraces and exceptional kitchen delivering the quality of rest that the desert demands and the discerning traveller deserves.

A late afternoon drive or guided walk in the cooler hours rounds the day out, the desert giving a different and equally compelling account of itself in the evening light.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 4: Desert Perspectives — Choose Your Adventure

Helicopter on red desert sands with guides preparing sundowner drinks, Namibia
Guests riding quad bikes across red desert dunes at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
Hot air balloon rising over Namib Desert with sun on horizon

Desert Perspectives — Choose Your Adventure

A day of choice, its pace and character entirely in your hands. A private guided walk through the dune environment for those who prefer to move slowly and observe closely.

A scenic helicopter flight for those who want to understand Namibia’s scale from above, the dune sea stretching in every direction to horizons that seem impossible, the mountains rising from the gravel plains in colours that shift as the aircraft moves through them. Or simply a morning at the lodge, the desert outside the window doing what it does, unhurried and indifferent and endlessly interesting.

The evening stargazing experience, when the observatory is operating, is one of the finest of its kind in southern Africa. Far from any artificial light, the Namib’s night sky is extraordinary in a way that no description adequately prepares you for. This is one of those moments that belongs to the journey and to nowhere else.

Day 5: Fly to the Skeleton Coast

Photographer capturing Skeleton Coast, dunes on left, ocean on right, Namibia
Skeleton Coast with ocean on right, golden dunes on left, blue sky, Namibia
Vast expanse of golden dunes on right, beach and ocean on left, Skeleton Coast

Fly to the Skeleton Coast

One of Africa’s great atmospheric transitions, the warm ochre world of the Namib giving way to the cool, fog-softened edge of the Atlantic in the course of a single flight.

The Skeleton Coast has been many things to many people over the centuries, feared by sailors, worked by whalers, and walked in desperate hope by those who survived its shipwrecks only to find themselves on one of the most inhospitable coastlines on earth.

Today it is yours, and Shipwreck Lodge, one of the most architecturally imaginative and atmospherically distinctive properties in Namibia, is where you will spend two nights at its heart.

Settle in, absorb the extraordinary environment, and head out for a first exploration of the coast as the afternoon light softens over the dunes and the Atlantic.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Shipwreck Lodge
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 6: Skeleton Coast Expedition Day

4x4 vehicles driving across golden dunes, deep blue sky, Namibia
White dunes with red sunset lighting over desert
Vast desert plains with sun setting on horizon

Skeleton Coast Expedition Day

A full private day in the Skeleton Coast wilderness, moving at your own pace through a landscape that very few travellers ever experience at this level of access and intimacy.

The journey towards Möwe Bay seal colony passes through shipwreck history made visible and physical, the remnants of vessels that met the coast on its own terms standing in the sand as permanent monuments to the power of this place.

The Clay Castles of the Hoarusib River valley are a private discovery of extraordinary geological drama. A beach lunch on the Atlantic shore, simple and perfectly prepared, the ocean before you and nothing else for a thousand kilometres in either direction.

The evening at Shipwreck Lodge is the Skeleton Coast at its most atmospheric. The fog arrives with the dusk, the sound of the ocean fills the lodge, and the particular quality of silence that belongs to remote places settles over everything.

This is luxury in its truest sense: the complete absence of anything unnecessary, and the complete presence of everything that matters.

Day 7: Fly to the Hoanib Region

Front view of luxury tented guest accommodation with private deck
Herd of elephants walking toward the camera with desert mountains in the background
Aerial view of safari guide leading three guests on a walking safari through the desert landscape of northwestern Namibia

Fly to the Hoanib Region

A flight inland into the Kaokoland and the Hoanib river country, one of Namibia’s most remote and least visited wilderness areas.

The landscape below the aircraft is extraordinary in its austerity, the gravel plains and dry mountain ranges of the north-west stretching in every direction without a road or a building to interrupt them.

Arrive at Hoanib Valley Camp, settle into accommodation of genuine quality in a setting of genuine wildness, and head out for an afternoon drive into the river system.

The Hoanib rewards the patient and the observant; its drama is quieter than Sossusvlei and its beauty more considered, the kind of landscape that improves with time and attention.

Day 8: Conservation in Action — Desert-Adapted Wildlife

Guests listening to safari guide on walking photography tour at sunrise in the desert

Conservation in Action — Desert-Adapted Wildlife

A private full day in the Hoanib concession, guided by someone who knows this landscape with genuine intimacy.

Desert-adapted elephants, giraffe, and predators are all possible here, and the encounters that the Hoanib delivers have a particular quality that comes from the rarity of the subjects, the scale of the setting, and the unhurried approach that only genuine wilderness and private access can provide.

Hoanib Valley Camp’s work with desert-adapted giraffe research and conservation adds an optional dimension of intellectual depth to the day for those who want it. The science of protecting wildlife in this remote country is brought to life by the people who actually do it.

Sundowners in the wilderness as the light leaves the mountains and the riverbeds cool.

Day 10: Fly to Ongava Private Game Reserve

View from guest suite deck at sunset over Namibian desert
Sunset drinks in the middle of the desert during private game drive
Main lodge at night with boma fire glowing as the sun sets, buildings lit up

Fly to Ongava Private Game Reserve

South-east to Ongava, a private reserve of exceptional standard on the boundary of Etosha National Park.

The contrast with the Hoanib is immediate and welcome, the landscape richer and more populated with wildlife, the camp a place of considerable comfort and quiet elegance.

A first afternoon drive introduces the Ongava ecosystem and its resident wildlife before the day ends at the underground waterhole hide, an experience of extraordinary intimacy where the animals come to you at eye level, unaware and unhurried, in a setting that no vehicle-based safari can replicate.

Arrive early, be still, and let the hide deliver what it consistently does for those patient enough to wait for it.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Anderssons at Ongava

Day 11: Safari & the Ongava Discovery Centre

Big Five endangered rhino in foreground with safari vehicle and guests in background
Herd of elephants walking towards a watering hole in the desert
Reception area with African artifacts, information displays, and welcoming décor

Safari & the Ongava Discovery Centre

A morning of exceptional game viewing, either in Ongava’s private reserve or on an excursion into Etosha National Park through nearby gates, where the waterholes in the dry season produce concentrations of wildlife that are among the finest in southern Africa.

The afternoon brings time at the Ongava Discovery Centre, a genuinely exceptional inclusion that connects the safari experience to the science and strategy of conservation at a level that is intellectually engaging without being didactic.

The Ongava Research Centre, working alongside the reserve on rhino monitoring and broader ecological research, is one of the most compelling examples of private reserve conservation on the continent.

Day 12: Ongava at Your Own Pace

Guests with safari guide on walking safari observing a giraffe through binoculars
Romantic couple sitting in private infinity pool watching springboks in the desert
Armed ranger guiding two guests on private walking safari, viewing giraffe

Ongava at Your Own Pace

The final full day is entirely yours. A last game drive in the golden morning hours, focused on whatever the journey has left on the wish list.

A return visit to the underground hide in the light of a different time of day. Or simply the terrace, the landscape, and the particular quality of an African morning that has nowhere to be and nothing to do except exist at the edge of one of the great wildernesses of the world. The kitchen will ensure that the day is as well fed as it is well spent.

The guides will ensure that whatever time is spent in the field is exceptional.

The rest is simply a matter of being here, and being grateful for it.

Daily Summary

  • Accommodation: Anderssons at Ongava
  • Meals: B, L, D

Day 13: Depart

View from guest suite deck at sunset over Namibian desert
Herd of elephants, adults and baby, in dusty desert surroundings
Lion lying down in the main lodge parking area, close-up wildlife encounter

Depart for Airport – (Optional extra days to Victoria Falls)

A short early activity if flight timings allow, one last unhurried hour in the Namibian bush before the transfer back to Windhoek for onward connections.

Leave with the particular quality of contentment that the finest journeys tend to produce, a sense that every decision made in the planning of this trip was the right one, and that the landscapes and experiences encountered along the way have left something behind that will not fade quickly.

Namibia has a way of staying with people. This version of it, experienced at this level, tends to stay permanently.

Optional Extension — Victoria Falls (2 to 3 Nights): Add Victoria Falls at the journey’s end for a finale of an entirely different register, the spray and thunder of the Zambezi, a sunset cruise on the river, and the celebratory energy of one of Africa’s great spectacles as a closing note to an exceptional journey.

Why African Signature

Curated Destinations

The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.

Tailored Experiences

The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.

Sustainable Stewardship

The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.

 Travel Insurance

Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.

Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.

Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.

Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
