Timeless Horizons: A Journey Through Kenya’s Wild Heart

Encounter African Wildlife in Kenya

This Kenya safari is designed to feel effortless, intimate and wildly varied — combining the dramatic landscapes of the Chyulu Hills with the wildlife-rich plains of the Greater Maasai Mara, staying in three exceptional Great Plains camps along the way.
You’ll begin at ol Donyo Lodge, where there’s no set routine — just a beautiful menu of options each day. Explore on foot, in an open safari vehicle, on horseback, or even by mountain bike; add a helicopter scenic flight if you’re keen, or simply slow down with a massage and long, lazy hours by the pool.
From there, you fly to the Mara for classic East African safari days at Mara Toto Tree Camp, with superb game viewing across both the reserve and conservancy areas — often with far fewer vehicles around sightings.
Your journey then deepens in the private Mara Naboisho Conservancy at Mara Nyika Camp, where early mornings and golden afternoons can become full-day adventures if the wildlife is calling — with the added possibility of night drives, walking safaris, and meaningful cultural connection that supports local Maasai families.

Experience wild African safaris in Kenya at Donya Lodge.

Transfer

Day 1 – Arrive in Nairobi, fly to the Chyulus, ease into safari life

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’ll be met by our representative, who will assist with formalities and luggage, then hand you over for your transfer to Wilson Airport. From there, you’ll take a morning flight to the Tsavo West airstrip and then onward to Ol Donyo Lodge.
Settle in, then start exactly as you mean to go on: ol Donyo is beautifully flexible, so you can choose a gentle first game drive, time at the waterhole hide, or simply relax by the pool and let the landscape (and Kilimanjaro views) sink in.

Day 2 – Choose-your-own-adventure safari in the Chyulu Hills.

These days are all about variety: mist-forest and lava fields, woodland and savannah, and the iconic kopjes — with no fixed routine. Pick your pace and your style: explore by vehicle, on foot, on horseback, by mountain bike, or even add a helicopter scenic for a true bird’s-eye perspective (additional cost).
Classic sunrise and late-afternoon game drives are available in open-sided Land Cruisers designed for photographers, and you can also enjoy wildlife viewing right from camp at the waterhole hide and log pile.

Day 3 – Deepen the experience: wildlife, culture, and the freedom to linger

Keep it wonderfully tailored: head out again on drives (or make it a longer day if sightings are too good to leave), add a guided walk with qualified walking guides, or opt for horse riding (from a gentle plains ride to longer, faster rides for confident intermediate riders).
If you feel like a cultural moment between wildlife adventures, you can also meet local Maasai and visit a school for a more personal sense of place.

Chyulu Hill National Park

Situated south of Nairobi between Tsavo West National Park and Amboseli National Park, Chyulu Hills National Park boasts striking and diverse landscapes. The Chyulus were formed by a 100-kilometre (62 miles) long series of ancient volcanic cones and craters, and now have one of the longest lava tubes in the world. It’s beautiful green rolling hills drop down into misty forests of Acacia tortillis and sweeping savannahs that have played backdrop to many iconic movies, including Out of Africa. The views towards Mt. Kilimanjaro are some of the best to be had. The local Maasai work together with conservation groups to minimise human-wildlife conflict with the nomadic pastoralists. Big Life is one of the well-known conservation groups that work in this area alongside some of the luxury boutique lodges situated in the Chyulu Hills. Activities in the greater Chyulus include exploring the area on foot, by vehicle, and by horseback, as well as cultural visits, day trips to Amboseli, and hiking to the highest points (around 182 meters/6000 feet high).

Experience and Activities

Day 4 – Fly to the Mara & settle into camp
This morning, you’ll fly back to Wilson Airport (Nairobi) and then connect onwards to the Mara (Ol Kiombo Airstrip) for your transfer into Mara Toto Tree Camp.
Once you’ve arrived, the shift in scenery is immediate — big skies, classic Mara plains, and that electric feeling that anything could appear around the next bend. With the camp’s superb location, you’ll have access to both the Maasai Mara Reserve and the more private Mara North Conservancy, which often means fewer vehicles around sightings and a more exclusive safari rhythm.

Day 5 – Classic Mara safari days (with options that go beyond the reserve)
Today is all about getting the most out of this extraordinary ecosystem. Your guiding team can tailor the day to the wildlife and to your mood — from early starts to longer drives if the viewing is simply too good to leave.
The conservancy model is a big part of what makes this stay special: it protects vital space for wildlife while directly supporting Maasai landowners and local families, and it can also open the door to experiences not usually available in the central reserve (such as walking safaris and night drives, depending on conservancy rules and conditions).

Maasai Mara

The Mara conservancies are Maasai-owned group ranches that have combined to conserve a total area nearly the size of the Maasai Mara National Reserve itself, covering 1450 square kilometres (560 square miles) across fifteen conservancies. The wildlife in the conservancies can be comparable to the main Maasai Mara game reserve, and in fact, some areas have higher densities of predators than in the central reserve. Because there are fewer camps, the conservancies can offer a more exclusive experience than in the central reserve, with generally fewer game-viewing vehicles around sightings. There are opportunities in some conservancies to do night drives and walking safaris, as well as visits to some of the villages of the local Maasai who own the land. The conservancy approach is widely seen as the way forward for wildlife conservation and ecotourism in Kenya because it not only secures vital space for wildlife but also includes the local population as custodians of their national heritage. This has been vital not only for the conservation of the whole greater Mara but also for wildlife corridors and the prosperity of many hundreds of Maasai families. Nearly forty tourist camps contribute to employment amongst the communities and provide a presence, alongside Maasai anti-poaching units, for the protection of wildlife.

Experience and Activities

Day 6 – transfer to Mara Nyika Camp
This morning you’ll be transported by open safari vehicle to Mara Nyika camp – making it a game drive along the way.Mara Nyika invites guests to explore the private and exclusive Naboisho Conservancy, the second largest conservancy in the greater Maasai Mara region. “Naboisho” means “coming together” in the Maasai’s Maa language and represents the local landowners who came together to establish the conservancy. The conservancy model combines the conservation of nature and cultural heritage, tourism, and the enhancement of livelihoods for the local communities. Each guest’s stay supports over 500 Maasai families with a sustainable livelihood and helps to ensure the conservation of this vital corner of the Maasai Mara eco-system.

Wildlife viewing

Early morning, late afternoon/ evening or even full day safari drives in some of the most luxurious wildlife-viewing vehicles are available. Each Toyota Land Cruiser is open-sided, canopied, and customized for photographers with fold-down screens, raised roofs, photographic bars, and multi-plug invertors, all in keeping with the origins of Dereck & Beverly Joubert as National Geographic photographers. Each vehicle can accommodate up to four guests (or two couples), however, if a family or group travels together, the camp can easily accommodate up to six guests in a vehicle.
Every day on safari brings a unique and distinct experience. Safari drives often start at sunrise, returning to camp for a late breakfast and departing again in the mid-afternoon after tea before returning just after sunset. However, game drives can often go out all day with a packed breakfast, lunch, and beverages, should you wish.
ery often, game drives will continue into the night, a possibility because of the camp’s location within the private Naboisho Conservancy. Night drives are incredibly prolific, and while they take patience, sightings commonly include lesser-known nocturnal mammals and even lion and hyena hunts.

The daily schedule is always flexible, and guests are encouraged to create their own itinerary according to their interests with guidance and recommendations from the camp’s professional guides.

Hot Air Ballooning

Hot air ballooning is available but should be booked in advance, subject to availability, and additional cost. Departures are very early in the morning to allow time to transfer to the nearest launching point.
Cultural Experience
The Naboisho Women’s Group cultural experience is supported by the Great Plains Foundation, enabling the group to purchase raw materials in bulk, including a tailor hired to work on leather products. Available to guests staying at Great Plains Conservation camps, all profits from the sale of their wares are ploughed back into the women’s business training to ensure this group is self-sustainable. Items available for purchase include but are not limited to, beaded and leather products, coasters, bracelets, necklaces, belts, dog collars, earrings, and decorated dawa sticks, for example.

Mara Naboisho Conservancy

Bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve to the southwest, the Olare Orok Conservancy to the west, and the Ol Kinyei Conservancy to the east, the Mara Naboisho Conservancy is comprised of over 50,000 hectares of unspoiled wilderness in Kenya’s Greater Mara Region.

The area is renowned for its bountiful biodiversity and breathtaking natural beauty with a wide range of wildlife on offer, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, wild dogs, and a host of plains game.

Visitors can look forward to optional activities that include guided walking safaris, spending the night in a fly camp, heading out on a night game drive in search of elusive nocturnal creatures, joining the Mara Naboisho Lion Project as they track lions across the conservancy, or visiting Maasai villages to learn about this fascinating indigenous culture. Some activities may require advance booking.

Why African Signature

Curated Destinations

The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.

Tailored Experiences

The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.

Sustainable Stewardship

The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.

 Travel Insurance

Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.

Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.

Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.

Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
