2026/2027 Rate Card for Cape Town to Pretoria
Prices are per person sharing, quoted in South African Rand with approximate US dollar equivalents. Rates fluctuate with exchange rates and season, so always confirm current figures before booking.

Longer transcontinental journeys, such as the 15-day Cape Town to Dar es Salaam expedition, run considerably higher. Expect $16,500 to $18,200 USD or more per person, depending on suite and season.
The Single Supplement
Solo travellers pay a fixed 50% surcharge across every suite category. This is a flat rule, not a sliding scale, and it applies regardless of route or season. Factor it in early if you are travelling alone, since it changes the budget conversation considerably.
What Your Fare Actually Includes
Every fare covers a wide range of on-board services. Understanding these inclusions is the fastest way to see genuine value in the price.

These inclusions mean your daily spending on board drops to almost nothing beyond gratuities and personal purchases.
What You Still Need to Budget For
Several costs sit outside the fare, and travellers should plan for them separately. International flights and airport transfers are not included. Neither are pre- or post-journey hotel stays, which we strongly recommend booking as buffer nights regardless of cost. Visas and compulsory travel insurance are compulsory additions. Staff gratuities and premium imported champagnes also fall outside the standard inclusions.

Deposits, Balances and Cancellation Terms
Rovos Rail holds provisional bookings without an upfront charge. Once another client challenges that space, a 25% deposit is required to confirm your reservation. The final balance is due eight weeks before departure.
Cancellation fees are tiered and worth understanding before you commit. Cancelling more than eight weeks out costs 10% to 25% of the fare. Cancelling between four and eight weeks out costs 50%. Anything inside four weeks forfeits the full amount. This structure is precisely why compulsory travel insurance matters so much here.
Why Prices Vary by Season and Route
Rates shift depending on demand, route length and suite availability. Peak South African travel months, generally April through September, carry higher pricing across most operators, and Rovos Rail is no exception. Grand transcontinental expeditions naturally cost more than the standard Cape Town to Pretoria run simply because they last longer and cross more borders.
Comparing like-for-like routes and suite classes, rather than headline prices alone, gives a far more accurate sense of value.
How Suite Choice Changes the True Cost Per Night
Breaking the fare down per night reframes the decision usefully. A three-night Pullman Suite and a three-night Royal Suite differ enormously in nightly rate, but both include identical meals, drinks and excursions. The price difference buys space, bed permanence and bathroom features rather than a different experience of the journey itself.
