Ethiopian Photographer – The Best of Ethiopia
A 14-day photographic journey through Ethiopia’s landscapes, cultures, and wildlife
Ethiopia is a photographer’s secret. Few countries on earth compress so much visual drama into a single journey: ancient stone churches carved into clifftops, the weathered faces of tribal elders, endemic wildlife found nowhere else on earth, and landscapes that shift from high alpine plateaus to lush river valleys in the space of a few hours’ flight. This is not a photography tour in the technical sense — there are no workshops or critiques, but every day of this 14-day journey places your camera in front of subjects and scenes that will test your skills, reward your patience, and fill your memory cards faster than you expect. From the golden-lit monasteries of Lalibela to the intimate encounters with Gelada monkeys in the Simien Mountains, the Ethiopian Explorer is built, almost accidentally, as one of the finest photographic journeys in Africa.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa
Arrive in Addis Ababa on your international flight and transfer to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Transfer time from the airport to the hotel: 20 minutes.
Vehicle type in Addis: minivan
Addis is a city of contrasts, and for a photographer, that tension is everything. After breakfast at the hotel, the city tour begins at 09:00 hours. Trinity Cathedral opens up a world of ornate religious iconography, solemn faces, and the kind of light that filters through stained glass in ways that are almost impossible to predict and endlessly rewarding.
St George Cathedral offers bold architecture and vivid colour, while the National Museum, home to some of the most significant archaeological finds in human history, presents quieter, more contemplative subjects. Keep your camera ready on the streets between stops. Addis moves fast, and its people are extraordinary to photograph.
Evening at one of the many fine restaurants in Addis
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Hyatt Regency Hotel or Sheraton Hotel
Full board and all non-alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 2 – Gondar & Simien Mountains
Simien Mountains
Commercial flight: Addis – Gondar Depart: 08:10
Gondar is where history and atmosphere collide, and for photographers, it delivers in abundance. The Royal Enclosure, and Fasilides Castle in particular, is a gift of crumbling stone, dramatic archways, and centuries of layered history.
Shoot the castle against the sky in the morning light before the crowds arrive, and look for the details, the textures of the stone, the shadows in the archways, the priests and locals who move through these spaces as if the centuries mean nothing.
Debre Berhan Silassie Church is equally rewarding, its famous ceiling of painted angel faces is one of the most photographed interiors in Ethiopia, and rightly so.
After lunch at a delightful little restaurant in Gondar, it’s a 2-hour drive to Limalimo Lodge in the Simien Mountains. As the light drops on the clifftops in front of the lodge, get your camera out. The evening walk offers sweeping escarpment views that turn extraordinary in the last hour of light.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Limalimo Lodge or Simien Mountain Lodge
Full board and all non-alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 3 – Simien Mountains
Simien Mountains
Leaving Limalimo Lodge early, the drive into the park takes about 40 minutes — and what waits on the other side is one of the genuine highlights of any photographic journey in Africa.
Spending time with Gelada monkeys is an experience unlike almost anything else on the continent. These are big, expressive, social animals, and they are almost completely unbothered by human presence, which means you can get close, genuinely close, and work with your camera in a way that feels more like a portrait session than a wildlife encounter.
Watch for the males displaying, the mothers grooming their young, and the youngsters playing at the edge of the cliff. The light in the Simiens in the morning is clean and golden, and the escarpment behind them makes for a backdrop that requires almost no effort.
The drive up towards Chenek offers the chance to look for Walia Ibex against dramatic high-altitude scenery, before a picnic lunch on the clifftops with views that stretch seemingly to the edge of the world. Return to the lodge in the afternoon via another visit with the Geladas, the late afternoon light will make you wish you had a second memory card.
Evening around the fire at the lodge.

Day 4 – Lalibela
Lalibela
Commercial flight: Gondar – Lalibela Depart: 10:30 Flight time: approximately 50 minutes.
If there is a single destination in Ethiopia that photographers speak about in hushed tones, it is Lalibela.
These 11th century rock-hewn churches, carved downward into the living rock under the direction of King Lalibela, create a visual world that feels entirely removed from ordinary experience. After settling in to Mazena Lodge for lunch, the afternoon begins with the first of three church clusters.
The interplay of light and shadow in the deep rock-cut trenches and passageways is extraordinarily soft, directional, and constantly shifting as the sun moves. Priests in white robes move between the churches carrying ancient crosses, pilgrims pray in doorways, and the stone itself seems to glow. Bring a wide lens and a prime. You will use both.
Evening at Mazena Lodge or one of the restaurants in town. Minivan used in Lalibela for all site visits.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Mazena Lodge or Maribela Hotel
Full board and all non-alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 5 – Lalibela
Day 5 – Lalibela
An early start after breakfast to drive to the cave church of Yemrehana Cristos, a church that pre-dates those in town and is arguably more beautiful in its detail and decoration.
The walk up to the cave takes about 20 minutes, and the interior, with its ornate Aksumite woodwork and the bones of ancient pilgrims resting in the shadows at the back, is deeply atmospheric. The light inside is dim and moody, perfect for those willing to push their ISO and work with available light.
Return to Lalibela for lunch at Ben Abebe Restaurant before visiting the last of the church clusters in the afternoon. The day ends with a 30-minute drive and a 20-minute walk up to Ashetan Monastery, perched high above the valley.
The views from here are staggering at any time of day, but the evening sundowners stop here are timed for the sunset, and the light across the valleys below is the kind of scene that makes every hour of travel feel completely worthwhile.
Evening meal at Mazena Lodge or one of the restaurants in town. Minivan used in all site visits

Full board and all non-alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 6 – Gheralta
Gheralta
Commercial flight: Lalibela – Axum Depart: 11:00 Flight time: approximately 45 minutes.
Axum is a brief but visually arresting stop; the towering ancient stelae rising from the ground like stone skyscrapers are unlike anything else in Africa, and the sense of scale and age they carry is immediately felt through a viewfinder.
Shoot them against the sky, shoot the detail of the carved false doors at their base, and look for the locals who gather in their shadow; they add life and scale to images that might otherwise feel purely archaeological.
The 3-hour drive to Korkor Lodge winds through some of the most cinematic back-country landscape in Ethiopia, the Gheralta Mountains rising ahead like a painter’s idea of what mountains should look like.
The afternoon brings the first of the Gheralta rock-hewn churches, smaller than Lalibela but arguably more dramatic in setting, clinging to clifftops and requiring a good uphill walk to reach. The effort is always rewarded.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Korkor Lodge
Full board and all non-alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 7 – Gheralta
Gheralta
A full day among the ancient churches of the Gheralta, and for photographers, this may be the most quietly remarkable day of the entire journey.
Dating from the 4th and 5th centuries, these churches are still active, still tended by priests who have dedicated their lives to their care, and still visited by local pilgrims who make the same steep climbs their ancestors have made for over a thousand years.
Maryam Korkor and Abuna Gebre Mikhail are the standouts; both require a good walk to reach, but both reward with interiors full of ancient murals, sacred objects, and remarkable human subjects, as well as clifftop views across the Tigray countryside that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The quality of light at altitude, bouncing off the golden sandstone, is something photographers tend to remember long after the journey is over.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Korkor Lodge
Full board and all non-alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 8 – Bale Mountains
Bale Mountains
From the airport, it is about a 1.5-hour drive up to the Webb Plateau and the tented camp at 3,450 metres, the last half hour a bumpy but memorable track that deposits you suddenly into a landscape that feels like the top of the world.
The camp overlooks a waterfall and pond that attracts an extraordinary concentration of endemic birdlife, and from the dining room alone, you can photograph Mountain Nyala, Ethiopian Wolves, and warthog in the soft highland light. This is the kind of camp where you keep your camera on the table at meals.
The tents are A-frame with en suite bathrooms. Hot water provided. Professional guide and 4×4 vehicles with local guide and interpreter.

Accommodation: Bale Tented Camp
Full board and all alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 9 – Bale Mountains
Bale Mountains
The Ethiopian Wolf is one of the rarest canids on earth and one of the most photogenic, a lean, rust-coloured predator that hunts the high plateau in a landscape of tussock grass and open sky that could not be better designed as a photographic backdrop.
Today is spent exploring the Webb Valley in search of wolves and the endemic rodents they hunt, moving between vehicle and foot as opportunities present themselves.
The walking underfoot is flat and easy, which means you can move quietly and position yourself without the distraction of difficult terrain. The birdlife here is exceptional too; the biodiversity of the plateau rewards anyone with a long lens and patience.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Bale Tented Camp
Full board and all alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 10 – Bale Mountains
Bale Mountains
The Gaysay Grasslands offer a different visual register entirely, great herds of Mountain Nyala and Reedbuck moving through open grassland, warthog trotting in single file, olive baboons, duiker, serval, and the occasional hyena punctuating a landscape that photographs beautifully in the soft highland morning light.
If market day in Dinsho aligns with the itinerary, it is not to be missed. The colour, energy, and human character of an Ethiopian rural market is a photographer’s dream.
The optional drive across the Sanetti Plateau, the highest commercial road in Africa, much of it above 4,000 metres, offers an almost surreal landscape of giant lobelia and open moorland under enormous skies.
The light at this altitude is unlike anything at sea level. Wide angles work brilliantly here.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Bale Tented Camp
Full board and all alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 11 – Omo Valley
Omo Valley
Arriving at Omo Camp in the evening, set beneath a canopy of fig and mahogany trees alongside the Omo River, the transition from highland to lowland is immediate and felt in the quality of the air, the sounds of the bush, and the warm amber light filtering through the trees at dusk.
Get your camera out before dinner. The camp itself, the river beyond, the trees above, the firelight beginning to glow, is worth a few frames before the day ends.
Daily Summary
Accommodation: Omo Tented Camp
Full board and all alcoholic drinks. All private guide fees, entrance fees, private vehicles and all taxes.
Day 12 – Omo Valley
Omo Valley
The Omo Valley is the human photography highlight of the entire journey.
The tribes of the lower Omo, the Hamar, the Mursi, the Kara, are among the most visually striking and culturally intact communities in Africa, and the access this itinerary provides is intimate and respectful.
The early morning visit to a Hamar village begins the day gently, the quality of the light, the textures of the ochre and beadwork, the faces of the women and children going about their morning routines it is the kind of subject matter that photographers come to Ethiopia specifically to find.
The 3-hour boat cruise up the Omo River offers an entirely different set of images: crocodiles on mudbanks, monkeys in the riverside trees, extraordinary birdlife, and the wild river itself moving through untouched bush.
The day ends at a fly camp on the riverbank in Mago National Park, where Mursi villagers arrive and stay the night — the evening often filled with dance and firelight that creates atmospheric conditions for photography that are simply impossible to manufacture.

Day 13 – Omo Valley
Omo Valley
The Kara are the smallest of the Omo Valley tribal groups and among the most extraordinary photographic subjects in Ethiopia, known for their elaborate body painting using white chalk, charcoal, and ochre, applied in patterns that shift and change with ceremony and season.
The afternoon spent with the Kara is unhurried and intimate, and the access is genuine.
The evening dance in the Kara village of Dus, firelight, rhythm, movement, and colour against a darkening sky is one of those photographic moments that no amount of planning can fully prepare you for. Return to camp to watch the sun set over the Omo River. A fitting final evening.

Day 14 – Addis-Ababa
Addis-Ababa
On reaching Addis, transfer back to your hotel to prepare for your departure flight or take one last opportunity to explore the markets and restaurants of the city, camera in hand.
The Merkato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa, is a short detour worth every minute if time allows.
Transfer to the airport for all outbound flights.

Why African Signature
Curated Destinations
The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.
Tailored Experiences
The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.
Sustainable Stewardship
The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.

Travel Insurance
Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.
In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.
Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.
Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.
Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
