South Africa – Cities and Safari

A South African Experience From Cape Town to Londolozi and Johannesburg

South Africa is one of those rare destinations that delivers on every promise and then quietly exceeds them all. It is a country of staggering variety, extraordinary beauty, and a human story so rich and so hard-won that engaging with it properly changes something in the traveller permanently. This journey moves through its finest chapters in a sequence that feels almost impossibly well-composed, opening in one of the world’s great cities before moving into legendary wilderness and closing with the beating, complex heart of the country’s largest metropolis.

Cape Town is where it begins, and Cape Town is the kind of city that makes you understand immediately why people who visit once tend to spend the rest of their lives trying to get back. Camissa House sits beneath the great flat-topped drama of Table Mountain, mountain and ocean framing every view, the light on the Atlantic doing something different and extraordinary at every hour of the day. The city reveals itself over three days of private exploration: the cable car ascent to Table Mountain, the rolling vineyards and heritage estates of the Cape Winelands, the food culture that has become one of the most exciting on the continent, the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton glittering in the November sun.

Then the wilderness. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Londolozi Varty Camp represent safari at its absolute finest, days shaped by early mornings in the golden bush, by guiding of exceptional intelligence and depth, by close encounters with Africa’s most iconic wildlife in one of the most celebrated private reserves on the continent. Evenings at Londolozi unfold around the fire under skies of extraordinary clarity, the night sounds of the bush carrying through the warm air, time moving at exactly the pace it should.

Johannesburg brings the journey to a close with energy, humanity, and genuine emotional power. The Peech Boutique Hotel provides an elegant and tranquil base from which to engage with Soweto and the Apartheid Museum, two experiences that place the full, extraordinary arc of South Africa’s modern history before you with a directness and honesty that is profoundly moving. South Africa rewards the curious, the open-hearted, and the well-guided. This journey delivers all three in abundance.

The history of Cape Town is woven through every stop, making this as much a cultural education as a gastronomic one. A wonderful way to spend a final Cape Town afternoon.

View from back of safari vehicle on game drive at Londolozi Sabi Sand, South Africa.

Cape Town – Londolozi

Today, Cape Town gives way to the wild, and the transition is one of the great pleasures of this journey.

A transfer to the airport, a connecting flight through Johannesburg, and an onward connection to the Kruger region, and by mid-afternoon, the bush has begun to assert itself most immediately and irresistibly.

That first warm breeze carrying the scent of wild sage through the vehicle window. The red dust of the track. The sudden awareness that the world here operates on entirely different terms and that those terms are deeply, immediately appealing. Londolozi receives its guests with the warmth and ease that has made it one of the great names in safari hospitality, and the suite, when you reach it, is everything a bush retreat should be.

Depending on arrival time, a late afternoon game drive offers the first taste of the Sabi Sand in its finest hours, the bush alive and golden and full of possibility.

The evening returns to camp for dinner under the stars, the night sounds beginning, the city a very long way away.

Day 7:  Londolozi Safari

Sunlight filters as guests walk with armed ranger on Londolozi walking safari.

First Full Day at Londolozi

Into the Rhythm of the Bush

The pre-dawn start on the first full safari morning is one of travel’s great pleasures, the bush cool and absolutely alive in the hour before sunrise, the light arriving slowly and turning the savanna from silver to gold as the drive moves deeper into the Sabi Sand.

Londolozi’s guides carry a depth of knowledge about this specific landscape that transforms every drive from a wildlife encounter into a genuine education, the tracks and behaviour and ecology of the reserve unfolding through expert commentary that makes the experience richer with every kilometre.

Return to camp for a breakfast of genuine quality as the morning warms, then the long, unhurried middle of the day at your own pace, the suite’s veranda offering its own quieter theatre of birdlife and bush atmosphere.

The late afternoon drive as the temperatures soften and the predators begin to move. Sundowners in the Sabi Sand as the sky does what the African sky does at this hour.

Dinner at the fire. The bush is settling into its night sounds around the camp. The Londolozi rhythm, and it is extraordinary from the very first day.

Leopard perched in tree at Londolozi, guests watching from game vehicle.

Going Deeper

Londolozi, Day Two

The second day at Londolozi brings a different and richer quality of engagement. The eye is sharper now, the ear more attuned to the sounds that matter, the guide’s commentary landing with greater depth because the context of the previous day has begun to accumulate into something that feels like genuine understanding.

Morning drives at Londolozi build on each other in this way, each one more layered than the last, the landscape becoming familiar enough to read and wild enough to still surprise at every turn.

A walking safari, where conditions allow, brings an entirely different dimension to the experience, the bush at eye level and on foot, producing a quality of presence and alertness that every guest tends to describe as one of the highlights of the entire journey.

The evening fire. The shared stories of the day. Sleep arrives easily in the Sabi Sand.

Young rhinoceros calf in golden grass at Londolozi, Big Five, endangered species.

Londolozi – Its Own Place

Londolozi, Day Three

By the third day the Londolozi rhythm has become entirely natural and entirely beloved. The early alarm is welcomed without hesitation, the morning drive anticipated from the moment of waking, the return to camp for breakfast a pleasure that the quality of Londolozi’s kitchen makes entirely deserved.

The Sabi Sands is one of the finest wildlife areas in Africa, its unfenced border with Kruger, its open vehicle access, and the sheer density and variety of its resident wildlife producing a consistency of exceptional sightings that very few reserves anywhere on earth can match.

Today is a day to follow whatever the bush presents with complete attention and complete gratitude. A leopard moving through the riverine thicket. Lion on a kill in the early light. A breeding herd of elephants crossing the road with the unhurried authority of animals that know exactly whose landscape this is.

The afternoon light on the open savanna. Another sundowner stop chosen with the quiet expertise that Londolozi’s guides bring to everything.

A Final Morning in the Wild

Londolozi, Last Day

The last day at Londolozi carries the particular quality of heightened awareness that comes from knowing that the bush is about to give way to the world again.

The morning drive takes on the character of a deeply attentive farewell, the landscapes and animals of the Sabi Sand encountered one final time with eyes and senses that four days in the wild have sharpened considerably.

Londolozi leaves its guests with the feeling of a place only partially understood and entirely loved, which is the mark of somewhere genuinely exceptional rather than merely spectacular.

A final afternoon at the camp, a last sundowner in the golden Sabi Sand light, and the warmth of a farewell from a team that has made every moment of this stay feel genuinely cared for.

The Peech is a beautifully considered retreat, its garden and calm interiors providing exactly the right kind of elegant decompression after days in the wild. Johannesburg reveals itself gradually and rewards those who approach it with genuine curiosity, its layers of history, creativity, and extraordinary human resilience making it one of the most compelling cities on the continent.

The afternoon is unhurried and yours, a long lunch on the terrace, a cocktail in the garden, or simply the pleasure of a beautiful space in which to let the day find its own shape.

Half Day Soweto and Apartheid Museum

Johannesburg’s history is one of the great and complicated stories of the twentieth century, and today engages with it honestly, deeply, and with the expert guidance that makes the experience genuinely meaningful.

The Soweto tour moves through one of the most historically resonant urban landscapes in the world, the streets and landmarks where the struggle against apartheid was lived, fought, and ultimately won: the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Mandela House, Desmond Tutu’s home, and the Regina Mundi Church, each carrying the weight of events that changed the course of a nation.

The Apartheid Museum that follows is one of the finest museums anywhere in Africa, its design and curation placing the full arc of South Africa’s modern history before the visitor with a directness and humanity that is impossible to experience without being profoundly moved.

To have stood on Table Mountain, watched a leopard in the Sabi Sand, and then walked through the Apartheid Museum in the same journey is to hold the full, extraordinary complexity of this country in your hands.

Included: Entrance fees to the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, Mandela House Museum, and the Apartheid Museum. Private vehicle and English-speaking guide throughout.

South Africa gives generously and honestly to every traveller who comes to it with open eyes, and what it gives does not fade quickly.

Why African Signature

Curated Destinations

The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.

Tailored Experiences

The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.

Sustainable Stewardship

The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.

 Travel Insurance

Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.

In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.

Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.

Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.

Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
