Crater to Cloud Forest, Migration & Gorillas
An Exclusive Journey into Africa’s Wild Heart
Rare moments. Front-row wildlife. Seamless comfort. This curated journey puts you in the thick of Africa’s greatest spectacles—calving season on the Serengeti and a face-to-face encounter with mountain gorillas—guided throughout by renowned private guide, Sean Lues. If you’re seeking something truly special, this is where adventure meets grace.
Begin in Arusha, easing into the rhythm of East Africa before ascending to the Ngorongoro Crater, a vast natural amphitheatre brimming with wildlife and sweeping views. Walk the story of humankind at Oldupai Gorge, then drive into the Serengeti for the birthing season, when wildebeest and zebra blanket the plains and new life takes its first, wobbly steps. Each evening, retire to our exclusive-use camp, reserved solely for our small group—private, unhurried, and perfectly placed for golden-hour sightings.
From Tanzania’s golden grasslands, we fly to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest—emerald, ancient, and alive with possibility. Here, an expertly paced trek (with porters available) brings you to a quiet, unforgettable hour with mountain gorillas: gentle, powerful, and profoundly moving. While in Bwindi, you may also choose to connect with the Batwa community, guardians of deep forest knowledge and tradition.
Throughout, Sean interprets behaviours, reads tracks, and times each day for the most rewarding photography and sightings, while seamless light-aircraft transfers and hand-picked camps keep the focus on experience rather than effort.
Minimum 6 and maximum 11 travellers, hosted and guided by Sean.
Bring a spirit of adventure, a flexible outlook, and a readiness for moments that stay with you long after you’re home.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arusha
Arusha
After you arrive in Kilimanjaro airport, you will be met and driven to Arusha.
Situated in the outskirts of this busy little town, Olerai, the Strand family house, is set under a canopy of yellow-barked acacias and other indigenous trees. The service here is warm and welcoming, and the gardens and pool are cool and refreshing. This bush home is the perfect start to your Tanzanian journey.
Debrief
Depending on incoming international flight arrival times, tonight we all meet for a social drink, debrief on the safari ahead, and then eat dinner together. If flights arrive late, we may postpone this till the morning.
- Accommodation: Olerai Lodge – Standard Double
- Meals: D
Day 2: Arusha to Plantation Lodge
Arusha to Plantation Lodge
Ease into the day at leisure: linger over coffee, enjoy the lodge’s tranquil gardens, or organise an in-room massage. A vehicle is on hand this morning for town excursions—browse boutiques, pick up a few curios, or visit local artisans at work; we’ll arrange everything to suit your pace.
After lunch at the lodge, depart for the Ngorongoro Highlands and check in at Plantation Lodge—owner-run by Renate and crafted to a high standard. Think elegant farmhouse charm set amid lush tropical gardens, individually and tastefully furnished rooms, and meals that showcase home-grown vegetables and fruit. A graceful, welcoming base for the crater country ahead.
- Accommodation: The Plantation Lodge – Standard Room
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater
Full day game drive in the crater
We make a very early start for our descent into the Ngorongoro Crater—lion, buffalo, rhino, elephant and a dazzling cast of plains game await. From the rim we drop through cloud and morning mist, scanning the vast floor below to see where the herds are moving.
Spend the day traversing this natural amphitheatre, pausing for a stretch and a picnic lunch before continuing to explore its varied habitats. As afternoon light softens, we begin the climb back to the rim and return to the lodge—tired, content, and a little awestruck.
At 2,236 metres above sea level, Ngorongoro is the largest unbroken, unflooded caldera on earth. Steep walls rise about 610 metres from the floor, enclosing 259 square kilometres of prime wildlife country—rightly counted among the Natural Wonders of the World and a true haven for game.
- Accommodation: The Plantation Lodge – Standard Room
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 4: Ngorongoro to Serengeti, via Oldupai
Full day drive- Ngorongoro to Serengeti, via Oldupai
After breakfast, depart Plantation Lodge and. with a packed lunch, we head off to the Serengeti. But, as always, with adventure along the way!
If conditions allow, we will pass the fascinating ‘shifting sands’ and a visit to Oldupai Gorge, often misspelled as “Olduvai Gorge”, a journey through the very cradle of human civilisation. Nestled in the Great Rift Valley of Tanzania, this archaeological site is famously known for the discovery of early human fossils that have shed light on human evolution, where Louis and Mary Leakey did most of their work. The accompanying museum is modest yet very informative, offering insights into the gorge’s geological and anthropological significance. Exhibits showcase well-preserved fossils and stone tools, and the gorge’s panoramic views complement the educational experience, making a stop here both enlightening and visually spectacular.
Shortly thereafter, we enter the short-grass plains of the Serengeti ecosystem. We should start seeing wildebeest, giraffe and Thomson’s gazelle, amongst others.
We aim to be in camp late afternoon, in time to refresh and sit watching the sunset over the horizon.
The days of heavy canvas hunting camps set for the likes of Roosevelt and Hemingway were almost over until Photographic safaris gained popularity. The Luxury Mobile Tented Camps are tasteful, extremely comfortable, and above all, mobile, allowing freedom to follow the movements of the great migratory herds. The tents, which have been custom designed, offer the very highest level of comfort and mobility. All tents are en-suite with Queen or twin-bedded sleeping arrangements, silver service dining and, of course, renowned well-balanced menus, served al fresco under the African stars or in the candlelit dining tent.
- Accommodation: Dulana Serengeti Camp – Tent
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 5: Serengeti
Serengeti
On your second day in the Serengeti, you’ll have even more time to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the surrounding plains. As the morning light casts a golden glow over the savannah, you’ll watch in awe as wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles roam freely, and predators like lions and cheetahs quietly survey the land. Every moment on this vast, open landscape offers something new—a surprising animal encounter, a breathtaking view, or the chance to witness nature in action. This extra day allows you to slow down, soak in the magic of the Serengeti, and create even more unforgettable memories in this extraordinary part of the world.
- Accommodation: Dulana Serengeti Camp – Tent
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 6: Serengeti
Serengeti
We will spend two full days here, using Dulana as a base to explore the surrounding plains – moving through the herds of this Great Migration.
One cannot describe adequately the immensity of this phenomenon – a million plus wildebeest and zebra pause for a while on the short grass plains for the birthing period. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves and zebra foals join the herds over a three-to-four-week time span. We will no doubt be witness to at least one birthing – often happening so quickly that we miss it, as the mothers try to get their young up and running as rapidly as possible to avoid the ever-present predators.
Lion, cheetah, hyaena and jackals, amongst others, naturally take a very keen interest in this sudden abundance of prey.
We spend each full day with an early start, followed by lunch back in camp and the inevitable midday siesta when most of the animals do the same.
Then back onto the plains when the heat starts to dissipate, and the animals are more active again.
We finish the last light of day watching the sun dip down below the horizon, leaving the plains in darkness as we make our way back to the campfire, with stories and memories of another African day.
- Accommodation: Dulana Serengeti Camp – Tent
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 7: Fly from Serengeti to Entebbe
Safari Flight to Entebbe (Serengeti → Uganda)
After breakfast, we game-drive to the airstrip—one last chance among the herds (and perhaps a final big-cat sighting). Board a light aircraft (typically 12-seater) from the southern Serengeti, pause at Musoma for Tanzanian border formalities, then sweep across the vastness of Lake Victoria before touching down in Entebbe. Met on arrival and transferred to our hotel for the night.
Time permitting, opt for a Shoebill search in nearby wetlands or simply wander to the lakeshore for a sunset unwind.
Arrival in Entebbe
Entebbe, situated on the serene shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda, is a charming town renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance. Serving as the country’s former capital, Entebbe is a gateway to Uganda’s diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. Visitors to Entebbe can explore its lush botanical gardens, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including colourful butterflies and exotic bird species. The town’s picturesque beaches offer opportunities for relaxation and water sports, while nearby Ngamba Island provides a sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from captivity.

Day 8: Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Entebbe → Kisoro → Nkuringo
After an early breakfast and hotel check-out, transfer to Entebbe International Airport for our flight to Kisoro.
On arrival at Kisoro Airstrip, meet our driver–guide and continue to the village edge for a short briefing. From here, we may walk through the village and smallholder plots to Lake Mutanda, then settle into a dugout canoe for a gentle 1–2 hour paddle across the lake—unhurried, scenic, and wonderfully peaceful. After landing, take a short walk back to your vehicle and drive on to Nkuringo (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes).
This afternoon, explore the local village or simply relax at the lodge and soak up the superb views.
- Accommodation: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge – Standard Garden Cottage
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 9: Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla Trekking
Today’s the day—your once-in-a-lifetime hour with the mountain gorillas.
After breakfast, at around 7:45 am, head to the Park Headquarters with packed lunch and water for a briefing on gorilla etiquette—the dos and don’ts that keep you and the gorillas safe. From there, enter the forest to begin your trek.
Expect 2–6 hours on foot through dense, steep rainforest, following animal paths as rangers guide you to your allocated family (they match routes to fitness levels where possible). The terrain and timing depend on the gorillas’ movements, but the reward is profound: quiet time in their presence—observing, listening, and sharing the forest with these gentle, endangered giants.
Good to know:
Altitude and gradients make hydration and energy snacks essential.
Porters are available at HQ (about US$20) and are strongly recommended. Hiring one eases the hike, supports local livelihoods, and reinforces community value in gorilla conservation.
- Tour: Gorilla Trekking
- Accommodation: Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge – Standard Garden Cottage
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 10: Batwa Tribe Visit and Birding
Batwa Tribe Visit and Birding
Morning (optional): Nombe Pocket Forest Birding
Set out early to the Nombe pocket forest—once part of Bwindi and still wonderfully wild. Trails have been cut, access is manageable, and the birding is superb. Plus we wander through local village area and observe the locals as they go about their normal daily routines. Prefer an easier pace? The lodge grounds also offer outstanding birding. Alternatively, wander into the village for a friendly chat with locals, or simply relax and soak up the views.
Afternoon: Buniga Forest Trail & Batwa Cultural Experience
Join a guided walk on the Buniga Forest Trail and spend time with the Batwa community—“Keepers of the Forest.” Learn about traditional forest skills, stories, music and the community’s deep stewardship of this ancient landscape. It’s an insightful, respectful encounter that adds rich context to your time in Bwindi.
- Tour: Batwa Tribe Visit and Birding

Day 11: Entebbe
Nkuringo → Kisoro Airstrip → Entebbe
After breakfast, bid farewell to Bwindi’s emerald ridges and drive to Kisoro Airstrip (around 1½ hours, road conditions permitting). We’ll assist with check-in for our light-aircraft flight back to Entebbe—keep to the soft-bag allowance (typically 15 kg including hand luggage) for a smooth boarding.
Settle in for a scenic hop over the patchwork hills, with fine views of Lake Mutanda and the Virunga volcanoes, before touching down in Entebbe. On arrival, you’ll be met on the tarmac and transferred to your hotel.
Time allowing, choose to unwind by the lakeshore, browse the craft market or stroll the botanical gardens.
- Accommodation: The Boma Hotel – Entebbe
- Meals: B, L, D
Day 12: Onward Travel
Departure Day – Entebbe
After a final pack, you’ll be collected and transferred to the airport for your international flight.
If schedules allow, add an early-morning visit to Mabamba Swamp for a guided canoe search for the legendary Shoebill—gliding through papyrus channels offers superb birding and a fitting last taste of wild Uganda. (Allow ~3–4 hours door-to-door; weather and water levels permitting. Additional cost may apply.)

Why African Signature
Curated Destinations
The Right Place We don’t do "everywhere." We focus on the corners of Africa where the fences are down and the wildlife is still truly wild. From the floodplains of the Zambezi to the dry pans of the Kalahari, we only send you to regions where the land is vast enough to get lost in and the sightings are worth the journey.
Tailored Experiences
The Ground Level Safari isn't just about sitting in a vehicle. It’s about the crunch of grass under your boots on a walking safari, the silent glide of a boat through a reed bed, or the patience of sitting at a waterhole for three hours. We design your days around the rhythm of the animals, not the schedule of a hotel.
Sustainable Stewardship
The Real Impact Travel here has to mean something. We partner with people who are actually on the front lines—the ones running anti-poaching units, protecting habitat, and ensuring local communities see the value in keeping these lions and elephants alive. Your trip is what keeps those boots on the ground.
Travel Insurance
Protect your investment and don’t forget Travel Insurance! This is mandatory for all our bookings.
In addition to trip cancellation and interruption, most travel insurance plans include coverage for trip delay, missed connection, lost or delayed baggage, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation with repatriation of remains. 24-hour assistance services are included to help the traveller with things such as emergency medical assistance, lost baggage tracking, emergency cash transfer, emergency or last-minute travel arrangements, assistance with replacing lost travel documents and much more.
Why Buy a Travel Insurance Plan? Because Travel Mishaps Occur Every Day! No matter how hard you try, there are some things you just can’t plan for:
If a family member gets sick. If your baggage is lost. If your trip is delayed. Your passport is lost or stolen. If the weather prevents your travel. You need to see a doctor for a sudden injury – your health insurance may not be valid overseas, and medical evacuations can be really expensive. If you miss a flight connection (- e.g. only 80% of US flights arrive on time) You don’t want to lose all your money if you have to cancel your trip. Sometimes, even expert travellers need a little help.
Whilst we will provide you with a Temporary Membership to the Flying Doctor’s Emergency Evacuation scheme in Tanzania, this has to have a corresponding international insurance to cover hospital and emergency cover when you land at the nearest available medical facility.
Please be sure that the travel insurance that you have is right for you!
